Why are amber and jet such a perfect combination? Neither behaves like an ordinary gemstone. They're both very lightweight, and can pick up a static charge. That's because they're both fossils - amber of the sap of ancient conifers, and jet of just about any living thing that shared this world with the dinosaurs. (Including other dinosaurs.)

There's some very convincing fake amber out there, but real amber releases a piney, resiny scent (rather than a chemical, burnt-plastic smell) when touched with a hot pin. Real jet, when rubbed against your front tooth, feels like it's "writing," and if you breathe on it, it shows the condensation from your breath longer than onyx or most plastics.
